Provides the user with the needed written plan for establishing the requirements for a power press safety program, components include; Control reliability, general requirements, point of operation guarding, point of operation devices, gates or movable barriers, presence sensing point of operation devices, safety distances, safety guards, pull-out devices, holdout or restraint devices, two hand control devices, two-hand trip devices, hand feeding tools, additional requirements for safe-guarding, inspection, maintenance, presses, work area clearances, training of press operators, training of press maintainers, overloading, injury reporting, presence sensing device initiation (PSDI), personal protective equipment (PPE), press evaluation, periodic inspections and certifications, certification/validation of safety systems for PSDI and other data as required by U.S. OSHA.

    BASIS:

Thousands of workers are injured every year due to non-existent, or improperly installed safety control devices or guards on mechanical power presses. Death, serious injury, crushed hands and arms, severed fingers, blindness and a host of other types of injuries can be the result of improper press safeguarding. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) estimates that most of these accidents can be prevented if proper safety precautions at job sites are initiated. This poses a serious problem for exposed workers and their employer. The OSHA Mechanical Power Press Safety Standard establishes uniform requirements to ensure that the hazards of improper press safeguarding in U.S. workplaces are evaluated, safety procedures implemented, and that the proper hazard information is transmitted to all affected workers.
