Forklifts are an important part of our everyday industry. They're traveling down aisles, in parking, and storage lots, Thousands of them, carrying loads ready for shipping, storing, delivering to manufacturing locations in the building, generally all in close proximity to walking or working employees. Training forklift operators, in the proper use of them is as important as training safe driving techniques to those who drive an automobile. OSHA estimates that forklifts cause approximately 85 fatalities per year. . They further report that 11% of forklifts currently in use will be invlolved in some type of accident. OSHA requires employers to have a Forklift Safety Plan to satisfy OSHA Standards 29 CFR 1910.178. This includes training, along with a proficiency test and certification. Recertification is required every three years unless the operator has been involved in an accident, a near miss. or is found to be unsafe in an evaluation., then retraining is necessary. The operator would also need to be retrained if conditions or equipment chages.
